Open Range - Update 8/11

A few changes here and there. Not much longer on this one.. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! After a few tweaks still in order, a few places not quite finished...

Whoops.. looking at my post here, how come you notice things like this after you'd published them online? LOL, it's kind of like looking at it in a mirror or upside down. It gives your brain a different perspective being a smaller size. A useful tool at times, at least for me.  I've gone in and changed the boulders on the right already. I didn't like the strong diagonal line I saw.. so I've dropped a couple more rocks in there to break that up. Next update you'll see them lol. One thing's for certain, I love my UART!

Monsoon - Aug 2010

All I can say is... WOW! I can't even begin to do this sunset from last week justice.

This band of clouds snuck in behind the mountain, I didn't realize it was coming because I had been zoned out working on "Open Range", my current colored pencil WIP. My hubby came home from work and headed outside, so I followed. Wow.. had to go back in and grab my camera, we weren't sure what was going to happen, but I wanted to be ready.

I'm so glad I did. I'm sharing just a few of the 136 images I captured that evening. I've done limited post-production work on these, adjusted my levels slightly, along with the curves. A few I didn't at all because they just became fluorescent and over the top. I didn't adjust the color as usual..what you see is what the camera captured.

It's always such a surreal feeling when the dark clouds gather on one side, but the sun is still
shining brightly on the other...

Then the clouds moved in over the mountain...

 Lightning flashed and thunder boomed....
The clouds billowed and churned above our heads as it grew darker....
It was almost as if you could see the heavens, if you looked hard enough.
And then......a shaft of sunlight and the sunset hour was upon us.
That magical hour of light that starts as a faint glow of color which increases with the setting sun,
growing richer, lingering for just a few brief minutes before the sun drops behind the
horizon ushering in the dusk that precedes the darkness.

I hope you are as amazed at the beauty God shared with us that evening as I am.

Open Range WIP

I started this piece back in 2008! I put it aside to work on other pieces.. and because I'm tying up loose ends.. it's time to tie this one up too.

This is from one of the pictures I took at the Artist photo shoot I attended here at the Empire Ranch. ( they filmed John Wayne's "The Cowboys" there among several others) There were 40 invited artists, models, stock etc, from dawn to dusk, one LONG day of photography. The photographers paid for the event, the models volunteered and the artist tipped them per picture... about 1.00 per min. The money earned (not the tips) were donated to the Foundation for the restoration of the Ranch, which is still working.

I never liked "where he lived" especially after these same models started turning up all over, from artists taking pictures at the open houses the ranch now holds on a regular basis. So.. I needed to decide what to do with it. I would never be happy just using the arena he was actually in, because I wanted something different. So, I took him out of the arena, put him out in the open range. There is no resource photo to follow now.. lol I'm on my artistic own two feet and it's GREAT!

12x16 on Uart 600, Prismacolor Pencils..

Because I removed him from the arena, that tree to the right bothers me now... it's gotta go.'s gone. Now.. to fix where it was. lol.

So this is where I am... I'm working heavy on my workshop things, but when I need a break I'll be back to this one... stay tuned!

Monsoon - July 2010 cont...again
